Shabby Chic framed Dragonfly – Inspired by…

This project idea was inspired by a Youtube video by Caroline, “My Home of the Hillside”. In her video, Caroline created 3 Shabby Chic projects featuring Rosette Roses hand-made from strips of scrap fabric. Well, I just had to try making these beautiful trash to treasure roses! And with that, came my Shabby Chic framed Dragonfly project. This creation features an upcycled old frame and other reuse and repurposed materials.

Be sure to watch Caroline’s video on how to make these Rosette Roses as well as my Quick Tips Mixed Media video below for the step by steps on my project.

After holiday creating

Hello all,

I love the holiday season and all of the crafty projects that I like to immerse myself in. I start in October and run crazy through December 25th. After that, though, I am ready to move on. The jingle bells and glitter are put away for another year and I break out my mixed media stash.

As a warm up to bigger and better mixed media projects, I created this 6″x8″ mixed media art piece on a flat panel canvas. I didn’t really have a solid direction, was just enjoying the whole process. Hence, the title for the piece below is “No Direction”.

A little collage, a little assemblage, a little steampunk and lots of paint. Yes, it is a familiar and happy place! Now I need to start thinking about what I am going to create for the Utah Arts Festival, Unmasked event!

Hope you all had a wonderful holiday season! Now lets move our craftsy selves onto the next project!

Happy day!

Upcycled Arts & Crafts

Hello all,

This weekend I finally made my way over to the new location of theClever Octopus’ Creative Reuse Center now located at 2250 S West Temple Salt Lake City, UT.  This company is a nonprofit company with a wonderful vision and great practices.  I love using recycled and reclaimed materials in my art work and the Clever Octopus is one of my favorite places to get it.

Even the oddest thing can be turned around into art work, like these square plastic graduation tags.  I thought these would make great little embellishments of cards, art journaling and mixed media.

For the examples below, I covered them in gesso, applied texture paste through a stencil and then painted with metallic paints.   It is a great little technique to upcycle these reclaimed tags.

Recycled art - plastic tags

Another treasure I found were these 3.5″ x 6.5″ tags.

Tag Art Journal Upcycle project

I think these will make a great Mixed Media Tag Art Journal.  I have so many of them that it will be perfect for a workshop.  I am thinking that maybe a two day workshop where we make everything from the cover to pages.

Well,  that is it for me today.  I hope you will try using reclaimed and reuse items on your next mixed media project.  Not only is it just plain fun, it is a great way to help the environment as well!

Happy day!

Mystical Dragonfly Mask & Event updates

Hello all,

Happy New Year!  It is hard to believe that we have put another year behind us.  My Creative Schedule is already pretty full and that makes me happy.   Creativation is only a few weeks away!   You can catch me demo’ing at the Imagine® booth.  I am so excited!

Creativation 2020

Next on the agenda is teaching a workshop at the Idaho Scrapbook Show on Friday, January 31st.  I will be teaching a Mixed Media Workshop; creating on a mini-canvas.

idaho scrapbook show

To round off the early 2020 schedule, is the Utah Arts Festival Unmasked Event (open to the public from 2/7/2020 through 2/21/2020).  I am creating a couple of masks to be auctioned off at this event.  The first Mask that I have created is shown below, Mystical Dragonfly Mask.  The mask features Dew Drops for The Robin’s Nest.   Creating the wings were pretty challenging, but fun!  I hope that it will do well at the auction.  Mystical Dragon fly Mask.badge final wm

My busy Creative Schedule in addition to my full-time day job has proved to be a challenge!  I have had to rely heavily on my organization skills to meet my project deadlines.  Being busy does make me happy so, all is good (Especially when I can keep it all together. lol)

Happy day!

Create Mixed Media Art Panel with Patina Frame

Hello all,

Posting today to share with you a Mixed Media Art Panel made with lots of bits and pieces paired with great texture and layers.  The frame was painted with home made patina mediums (made with acrylic paint, texture powder and sand).  Of course, you could always use a Patina kit, rather than making your own mediums.  Kits are a great option and decreases the tension of trying something new!  Be sure to check out the Mixed Media Quick Tips video below for the step by steps.

A Mixed Media Journey

Hello all,

While I was out searching for treasures at my favorite antique shops and second hand stores, I found a really cool vintage car (home decor piece) done in metal.  I grabbed it up right away with thoughts of a Mixed Media canvas bouncing around in my head.  I was so excited however, it took me several weeks to fit this project into my schedule.  So much mixed media, so little time!  lol

Anyhow, just wanted to share this project with you today.  I am planning on framing this 14″ x 18″ piece once I find the perfect frame.

I love how it turned out and I hope you do too!
