Reclaimed Redwood = Awesome project

Hello all,

When I discovered these wonderful reclaimed redwood boards, I instantly thought of a making an Art Block with it.  My husband cut them down into 5 x 8 blocks for me and then I went to work.

The finished piece features a painted, stenciled, and stamped canvas.  Modeling pasted was used with the stencil to add dimension and texture.  The only hard-wire on the piece is the wire at the top of the woodblock and the grommet on the lower right portion of the canvas.  Acrylic paint and sprays gave the piece it’s color.  I am liking the simple but rustic look.

Looking forward to creating more wonderful pieces with these beautiful reclaimed redwood blocks!

Change your Thoughts…Art Journal Page

Hello all,

I am reminded, as I sit here at my craft desk late on a Sunday night, how quickly the world changes around us.  Sometimes it seems over whelming to tackle all that gets thrown our way.  However, being an optimistic person by nature, I am also reminded of a quote that helps me put this crazy life back into perspective:

“Change your thoughts and you change your world”

by Norman Vincent Peale

This is so very true!  Our life experiences, fears, likes and dislikes often intensify our reactions to changes; making them feel far worse than they actually are.  For me, this quote reminds me that (even though I cannot control all that is around me) I can control how I think and react to it.

With this in mind, I have created the Art Journal page below.  I hope you enjoy  this page and my ramblings about how powerful our thoughts are at influencing our reactions to life’s challenges.

Steampunk Mixed Media Framed

Hello all,

So, here is the most ornate piece of Steampunk art that I have done, as of yet.

Mised Media steampunk framed brush.jpg

This framed 7.5″ x 11″ piece features a center focal point of a wood handled paint brush surrounded by a wide variety of embellishments (that I pretty much lost track of, as far as who they are from, as I was madly working away).

After everything was glued down, I coated everything with black gesso and then added color with metallic paints.   I really think I good get fully into the Steampunk mode…must do more research!  🙂

Materials:

  • Prima, Finnabair Art Basics – Black Gesso & Soft Gloss Gel
  • A lot of embellishments…buttons, wood pieces, lace, metal pieces etc…
  • General hardware store wood handled paint brush
  • Ranger, Adirondack, Metallic paint

Happy Day!

Altered Photo Frame – Roses

Hello all,

Thought I would share my latest altered art project.  I found a cheapo frame at the 2nd hand store that was missing it’s feet and looking pretty worn out.   Before I could start painting, I had to fix the missing feet issue.  So, I adhered little wooden dowel end caps to the bottom of the frame.  This fix worked very nicely!

The entire frame was then painted with black gesso and allowed to dry.  To give just a touch of color to the floral element at the top of the frame, I applied oil pastels with my fingers.  I then applied the first coat of Soft Gloss Gel, allowed it to dry and repeated these steps again (from oil pastels to coat of Gloss Gel). To finish it up, I applied gold stencil paste here and there until I was satisfied with the look of it and applied one last layer of Soft Gloss Gel to seal it all up.

It is pretty amazing what a little paint and shine can do to breath life back into the old!

Can’t wait to find another piece to turn from trash to treasure!  After I make my next journal page, of course!

Happy Day!

Altered Art w/Patina Effect Paste

Hello all,

I am just loving the Patina Effect Paste by Finnebair!  I used this technique on an old metal candlestick that I found and a second hand store.  My only regret is not taking a photo of what the candlestick looked like before I altered it.

For the embellishment; I adhered cheesecloth, flowers, and altered metal pieces to a piece of heavy manila paper and then attached it to the candlestick with some elastic.  This way it can be removed and changed out with the season etc…

Be sure to checkout Anna Dabrowska’s You Tube video on this technique as she does a terrific job showing you how to use this product.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-alJiLmTfyk
